Diane Gorzycki, the band director our school is named after, started an amazing tradition.  The day before winter break she had the Fine Arts students perform for the school and provide them lunch.  Just to say thank you for everyone's support of the Fine Arts Department.  Here are some pictures of the performances.

Some of the outstanding 6th graders this six weeks.
There are lots of things the GMS PTA does for the staff that I love.  The Cookie Exchange is definitely on top!
The Culinary classes created cupcake master pieces and then distributed them to staff.
Another treat from our amazing PTA is the augmented sandbox.  Teachers had time this week learning how to use it.
It is always fun to watch the theater kids create their own plays.  What you see on film is definitely not what was actually happening behind the scene!
Another exciting event this week was the Tiger Cage Business Competition.  Students are asked to create their own business and present the concept to actual business owners!  These are the top 3 winners.
Remember it is a short week next week.  The Fine Arts department has several performances on Tuesday.  This is an annual tradition started by Diane Gorzycki herself.

The 8th grade Lady Tigers Basketball team also has final Tuesday.

Have a great weekend.

7th grade science classes this week dissected chicken wings. Supposedly students feel this is worse than frogs.  I guess when you cook chicken wings dissecting them seems normal.

The GMS Student Council for one of their Legacy of Giving project collected 2260 lbs of food for the Capital Area Food Bank.  Today was a field trip to the food bank to help.
Students in art created projects showing a balance between positive and negative spaces.
Beginner theater students created puppets to use for their performance.
Green Ag class has been busy around campus working on all the garden and flower beds.
Don't forget the Middle School Fair is tomorrow for those that would like to come and visit.  The Lady Tigers have a basketball tournament and the boy soccer teams have games Saturday as well.  There are several fine arts performances next week.  Please check the school website for more specific information.

Have a great weekend.

Student Council had a successful Can Food Drive.  Mrs. Reedy's class won the contest with Mrs. Wiese, Mr. Grimes and Coach Napoli close behind.  But like Mrs. Huerta stated, "We are all winners because we showed empathy by giving to others who are less fortunate."

Sixth graders spent time today reviewing their children's books.

There is lots happening when we return from break:  MOY Writing for 7th graders, Callbacks for the GMS Musical, Glee rehearsal, Student Council Fieldtrip to Food Bank, and Lady Tigers Basketball - just to name a few.

So get some rest and have a Happy Thanksgiving.

The counseling department has created a series of parenting classes.  The first one is Nov. 16th on Tech Generation.  Please check out our website for more information on this program and others.

The GMS Lost and Found is overflowing.  Please have your children stop by and look for lost items.  Items remaining by next Friday will be donated.  Also, make sure you label items brought to school.  This includes things like inhalers and epi-pens.

GMS also celebrated our Tiger Veterans:  Mr. Kagan, Ms. Barraza, and Mr. Raup.  Thank you for your service.  Enjoy your Veteran's Day Weekend.

Over the past few weeks, the school has had several families unaware of a specific rules or policies here at GMS.   The district Student Code of Conduct can be located on the district website at www.austinisd.org.  The GMS Student Handbook is located in the student planner.  It is the first 13 pages with the front page requesting both the student and parent signature.

Our Lady Tiger Volleyball teams have ended their seasons.  Proud of all these Tigers.  Our 8th grade Tigers won the Southwest Championship.   (This is a great time to mention that if you have a picture that you would like me to blog or tweet, please email it to me with a quick caption.  I don't attend all events and need some help with photos!)

Fun to see yoga happening in PE.

The choir program had their Fall Concert this week and I heard it was amazing.

The 7th grade teams recognized outstanding students from last six weeks.

Online ordering for the upcoming bookfair has begun.  The bookfair begins October 30th.

The GMS Student Leadership Team and PTA Community Outreach developed a plan to help victims from Hurricane Harvey.  Together, they collected four truckloads of donations like towels, clothes, food, toiletries, diapers, and pet food.  Meals were provided to a local nursing home hosting patients from flooded communities.  Gift cards continue to come in and are being delivered as well.  Thank you to everyone that supported our Texan communities.
The GMS volleyball teams have ended the regular season.  Both A teams moved up to the next round.  Please join us Monday night at 6:00 to cheer them to the final bracket Wednesday.

At the same time, the GMS football teams are playing O'Henry at House Park starting at 6:00.  All our sport teams could use your support.

Just a reminder that all upcoming events and activities can be found at www.gmstigers.com.
Next week is Transportation Week.  With 19 buses bringing students to and from school safely each school day, please help and show your appreciation.

Have a great weekend.
